During Hurricane Sandy (circa 2012), Mary Candler Lind and I dreamed up a theatre company.
We wanted to build an ensemble of diverse artists. We wanted to see more women as directors, producers, SMs, designers, etc. We wanted to do good classic theatre with a trained ensemble of artists who did work that was immediate and personal. We named our fledgling company Hedgepig Ensemble.

In the years that followed, Hedgepig hosted/produced many events and productions throughout New York and Brooklyn.

And then: the COVID years. Like many theatre companies, we had to ask the hard questions. Who are we? Who do we serve? What do we do now?

Fast forward (x years) later, Hedgepig has heeded a new call to action - that action is Expand the Canon (ETC). Born from Hedgepig’s mission to diversify the theatre landscape, ETC seeks to expand our general notion of “classic theatre” to include plays by women and other underrepresented groups. With a curated list of 52 plays, ETC is paving the way for inclusivity within the classic canon.
